The smoke stacks rise as the permanent backdrop to an America that would be unfamiliar, yet completely realized to Woody. How controls, but who rules “this land!” There is something to be said as the music echoes in every pool hall throughout this dark wonderful land that begs to be explored and realized in pixels and taco recipes, in chlorinated waterways, in little wood boxes passed down generational through posts and practices of a new oral tradition. Text me my sister, text me the texture of the Redwood. Text me the smell of shoe polish and the old man’s story of an America washed to many times in the machine, yet coming pressed and starched. Woody realized this land was made for you the me.

Where has woody been? Of course the acoustic guitar ambles along, expressing this sense of movement, the stream that Woody carved and danced down. The train track streams behind.

Where would Woody be? The question is unique and wonderfully stated as we begin. Who would Woody be in today’s world? Travel Woody, travel. Where would this land and its many paths lead our explorer. Life has got a habit of making use question. Woody would question the ebbs and flows of our technological wonderland. The music pulses and Woody lives 2.0, 3.5, and the floppy turns into the blog. The land changes and follows the flow of the artist, Woody, the fantastical badger.

Bottesini is notoriously difficult to classify. The guiding principle of the ensemble has always been dedicated to free improvisation. Over the history of the band, a number of remarkable musicians have joined in the collective to make the magic of improvised music happen.

Since 2009, Bottesini has undergone an identity shift. The group is still creating improvised music that sounds like intricately woven and arranged compositions. Yet, the group has shifted from a collective of musician rotating through the group to a core group of talented musicians who have found remarkable chemistry through a shared improvisatory voice.

The chemistry of Paul Riola, saxophones, Glen Whitehead, trumpet, Serafin Sanchez, tenor saxophone, Glen Taylor, petal steel, Doug Anderson, bass, and Jay Ellis, drums has led to a change in musical direction for the band as well. The music has taken a turn into decidedly jazz-based territory— and audiences often express disbelief that the music is actually improvised. The new Bottesini is beautifully melodic and surprisingly accessible to a mainstream audience.

August is an exciting month for The Bottesini Project. We will be appearing at multiple venues throughout the Denver area. Over the past year, Bottesini has shifted from a musical collective to a cohesive band.
